One episode after another to uncover the authentic soul of an Italy that can stir emotion in every season. Una Gita Fuoriporta takes us on an extraordinary journey into the authentic heart of Sicily. On Tuesday 19th August at 9pm – in its premiere broadcast – the special episode dedicated to the “Gemme di Sicilia” project will air, following an itinerary that crosses the municipalities of Caltanissetta, San Cataldo, Serradifalco and Delia.

A territory that unfolds like an ancient book, written across hills, monuments, stones and traditions, and which today becomes the protagonist of a new vision of tourism: slow, authentic and accessible.

The journey begins in the provincial capital, Caltanissetta, a crossroads of peoples and cultures, where the baroque splendour of the Cattedrale di Santa Maria la Nova (Cathedral of Santa Maria la Nova) converses with memories of the mining era. Among the squares of the historic centre and its old palazzos, the city reveals itself as the ideal gateway to the routes of the Nisseno area. The route continues towards San Cataldo, with an exploration of the Parco Minerario di Gabbara (Gabbara Mining Park), a place that preserves the history of gruelling mining work and tells the story of a community that grew up around sulphur and salt.

In Serradifalco, time instead seems to flow more slowly: the compact village holds onto churches, historic buildings and traditions that still echo through Sunday customs today. The route finally leads to Delia, where the striking Castellaccio stands, a Norman-era testimony that dominates the valley and tells of battles that still stir powerful emotions at first sight. The food and wine soul of these lands is not to be missed either: a wealth of authentic flavours, born of centuries-old traditions, also brought to life thanks to the collaboration with Slow Food Sicilia.

At the end of filming, journalist David Romano, presenter of the TV series, said:

“Gemme di Sicilia is much more than a tourism project: it is an invitation to discover an inland area whose history has long been intertwined with mines and castles, and which today opens up to the future with a new identity as a sustainable destination. I cannot help but stress how, by their very nature, these lands are welcoming and carry genuinely wholesome values”

The project, funded by the Sicilian Region and promoted by the GAL Terre del Nisseno (Local Action Group), aims to enhance the Ways of the Castles, of Sulphur and of Potassium Salts by mapping over 260 points of interest and 25 itineraries, alongside an integrated communication strategy (app, social media, events and promotional campaigns), involving more than 100 private operators and activating a local partnership network. The operation is carried out by a grouping of companies from Umbria made up of Euromedia srl and Int.Geo.Mod srl, which were awarded the tender.
