There are stories that, over the years, grow only stronger in identity; landscapes that, at first glance, evoke scents and flavours deeply rooted in the land and that, even today, offer an authentic and immersive tale. Such is the case of Sinalunga, in the province of Siena, where autumn brings with it an event whose roots run deep in the collective memory of the Valdichiana.

This is the Fiera alla Pieve, an event that has accompanied the life of the community for over a century and which, from 3 to 11 October 2026, will once again bring Pieve di Sinalunga – also known as Pieve di San Pietro ad Mensulas – to life, with nine days dedicated to trade, agriculture, food and wine, entertainment and local traditions. It is not simply a large fair. It is one of those occasions when a community rediscovers itself, showcasing its productive and cultural heritage and turning streets and squares into a collective story of the Valdichiana.

From cattle markets to today's celebration

The history of the Fiera alla Pieve is closely tied to the area's farming vocation. The event was born mainly as a market for livestock, meat and goods, drawing people from far afield, who would reach the Pieve on foot, by bicycle or in horse-drawn carts. It was a fair deeply rooted in the rural economy: a place to meet, buy, sell, exchange views and, above all, keep alive the bonds between the communities of the Valdichiana.

The Municipality of Sinalunga preserves evidence of this long history, recalling also the gastronomic tradition that accompanied the days of the fair, from porchetta (roast pork) to celery, from croccante (almond brittle) to cheeses. As the decades passed, society changed, and so did the Fair. Yet its popular character has remained unchanged. Today, that same event has become a great community celebration bringing together craftsmanship, agriculture, food, entertainment and shows, without ever breaking the thread with its origins.

Nearly 600 stalls in the heart of Pieve di Sinalunga

One of the elements that most defines the Fair is its scale. Nearly 600 stalls will line the traditional market route, offering a range spanning different categories and products. For nine days, Pieve di Sinalunga will become one great open-air space: the heart of the event will be Viale Trieste, while Piazza S. Guerri will host the Fiera dell'Agricoltura (Agricultural Fair), one of the most significant moments for understanding the bond between the event and the Valdichiana's productive history.

Between via Ginsburg and via Pier Paolo Pasolini a funfair will be set up, while along the route there will be no shortage of street food and gastronomic offerings. It is precisely this overlap of experiences that makes the Fair an event capable of engaging different generations: from those arriving in search of a specific product, to those wanting to get to know local agriculture more closely, right through to families choosing it for a truly special day trip.

The White Giant of the Valdichiana

If there is one image that, more than any other, tells the story of the relationship between the Fiera alla Pieve and the local area, it is that of the Chianina. The great cattle breed of the Valdichiana will take centre stage at the interprovincial show, an event that brings back into focus one of the most recognisable expressions of the area's agriculture. The presence of breeders brings attention back to the daily work behind safeguarding a breed deeply tied to the farming history of Tuscany and the Valdichiana.

Over the years, the Fiera dell'Agricoltura has also become a meeting point for breeders, operators and industry figures. The Associazione Amici della Chianina (Friends of the Chianina Association) organises the Fiera dell'Agricoltura within the Fiera alla Pieve and, since 2016, has brought breeders to the grounds of the railway station, pairing the presence of the animals with cultural initiatives, talks, exhibitions and activities dedicated to celebrating rural tradition. It is here that the Fair rediscovers one of its most authentic images: that of an area that continues to safeguard its bond with agriculture and with the animals that have shaped its history.

Sinalunga told through its flavours

Oil, wine, farm produce and Chianina beef are among the specialities that define the Sinalunga area. Alongside the agricultural dimension, there will be room for craftsmanship, street food and entertainment in all its forms, in a programme designed to accompany the nine days of the event. The Municipality of Sinalunga, together with local associations, businesses and private citizens, contributes to staging an event that directly involves a significant part of the area's social and economic fabric.

The Fair as a chance to discover Sinalunga

But arriving in Sinalunga during the days of the Fair also means going beyond the stalls and letting yourself be guided through an area that holds a historical, artistic and cultural heritage of great interest.

The historic centre tells the story of several eras in the village's past: from its medieval layout, with its compact structure and traces of the old fortifications, to the Renaissance buildings that reshaped its appearance over the centuries. In the old village, Piazza Garibaldi brings together some of its most significant sites, including the Collegiata di San Martino, the Chiesa della Madonna delle Nevi and the Chiesa di Santa Croce, which houses the Sposalizio della Vergine (Marriage of the Virgin) from the school of Luca Signorelli.

A short distance away, history reaches even further back in time with Larth – Le Stanze Etrusche (the Etruscan Rooms), a museum space housing finds from the Etruscan necropolises and settlements of the area. It is a presence that reminds us just how deep Sinalunga's roots run, in an area crossed over the centuries by major trade and travel routes.

And then there is the Pieve di San Pietro ad Mensula, right in Pieve di Sinalunga, a building of Romanesque origin that houses works of Sienese art and stands as one of the symbolic sites of the area's religious history. The Pieve itself is linked to the tradition of the Fiera alla Pieve and to the feast of the Madonna del Rosario: the fair's original dates were tied to these very celebrations.

A tradition that lives on

From 3 to 11 October 2026, Pieve di Sinalunga will once again tell the story of the Valdichiana from a particular point of view: that of a community that preserves the memory of its agricultural origins while, at the same time, continuing to transform that memory into a contemporary celebration. Nine days to meet, taste, discover and experience Sinalunga. And a reminder that, in the Valdichiana, some traditions don't just belong to the past: they remain, always, a part of the present.
